Embracing Hope At The Start of a New Year

Rebels from Tyneside XR met at the Angel of the North in Gateshead to watch the sun rise on the first day of this new year.

As the sun appeared on the horizon at 8:20am on 1 January 2023, a small group gathered by this local landmark to mark the start of a new year.

What an unexpected glorious sunrise we got to experience! Initially, we huddled together as the wind blew strong and a light drizzle descended, but as the sun peeked above the horizon, the skies cleared and we were treated to a gorgeous sky and blinding sunlight.

It was a great opportunity to reflect on the events of the past year, to grieve for the lives lost around the world due to the climate emergency, to remember those whose homes and livelihoods have been destroyed through extreme weather conditions and to express frustration at the apparent inaction of the UK government to take the climate emergency seriously. It’s easy to despair and feel that nothing we do makes any difference, but hope is found in building community to model the world we long for. Together, we pledged to continue to tell the truth and act now. We voiced our aspirations and made our own resolutions. 2023 is another opportunity to stand up and speak out, to take to the streets and share our desire for change.

We shared tears, hugs, ideas and a hearty cooked breakfast together. We look forward to more community building. Come and join us!

Following the XR national announcement on social media as the clock struck midnight, we also joined with XRUK in announcing that WE QUIT!

Hear us out. We’re not going anywhere. We’re not packing up and going home. We’re not giving up. But we are supporting XR’s controversial New Year’s resolution to temporarily shift away from public disruption as a primary tactic. We’re still committed to addressing the climate emergency. Emissions continue to rise and our planet is dying at an accelerated rate.

We will commit to building collective power, strengthening in number and thriving through bridge-building. We will stand together and become impossible to ignore. We will unite to survive.
